Stability Leading to Optimism

by Natasha Chater

Optimism reigns as the supreme feeling for career analysts.  With the summer of 2003 showing a record low for the amount of jobs available for job-seekers of all types, there is still an air of optimism for future months. The stability of profit margins allows positive expectations for future corporate conditions.  Recent events have caused drastic changes in the job-market, creating a dramatic decrease in the availability jobs. Thus, we look to stability as a way to get out of the state that the market is currently in. If the market becomes stable, it is a good sign that trends will not significantly decrease anytime soon.  According to a report from onrec.com, "If corporate profits continue to improve, the employment market should gain strength during the second half of the year" Mark Anderson, President of ExecuNet said.  ExecuNet is a career management and recruiting resource center for executives and recruiters.

There is hope for people searching for jobs in Executive positions.  Even with the amount of jobs available to job-seekers being at a record low, the summer of 2003 is showing a stable trend in the areas of executive employment.  Executive positions are filling fast as the numbers of available positions continue to rise.  According to a report from onrec.com, the Executive Job Index showed a slight increase in hiring trends.  The report showed a demand for Human Resources and Operations Management Executives.  It also showed that the demand for Finance, General Management, Sales/Marketing, MIS/IT, and Consulting executives remained stable.

Discouraged Degree Holders Strive to Find Hope

by Natasha Chater

With the job market being at a record standing as one of the worst in years, many students attempt to get ahead in their job search by receiving higher-level degrees.  They listen to their parents and mentors who often tell them that the only way to get ahead in life is to get the best education available.  However, many students are learning the hard way that even the best grades and the highest-level degrees cannot guarantee a position in the current tumultuous marketplace.  Although students are heading down the right path by striving for excellence, after graduation, many get discouraged as they realize that even with their flashy degrees, a good job is still hard to find.  According to a report from D.E. Ledger from Knight Ridder Newspapers, having an MBA or any other higher-level degree does not guarantee a job. Jennifer Layden, 23, who holds two business degrees, said she expected a job to fall in her lap.  Now that she has graduated with her degrees and works as a bartender, she knows that this is not the case.  However, even with her luck so far, she is still optimistic that her business degrees will eventually pay off.

Dependability on the Economy

by Natasha Chater

The status of the current job market is due to the downfall that is afflicting the existing economy.  The government has a big job ahead of them if they plan to bring the U.S. out of its current economic slump.  Over the past few years, the nation has been watching its economy drop significantly, as it results in one of the worst job markets in recorded history.  In the past, whenever the economy fell into one of its mini-depressions, trends were able to regain normalcy shortly after.  Because of its reputation in the past, this ability to bounce back is expected to be the outcome of current economic conditions.  There are many reasons why the economic drop occurred in the first place.  One view is that the slump is due to structural imbalances in the economy.  Using data collected from Structural analysts, Steven Pearlstein concluded that the “the structural imbalances that had developed in the 1990s -- excessive debt, record trade imbalances, inflated asset prices and business overinvestment” account for the economic slowdown.  Pearlstein also believes that the country will not be back to normal until a reasonable balance is met. If all goes well, the economy may be able to find a way to dig out of its financial hole.

Business grad. creates job database

Bigapplehead.com, an Internet job-hunting service founded by Rutgers School of Business graduate Jonathan Hedvat, can connect University students with their dream jobs.

Hedvat founded the service -- dedicated to helping "job seekers find jobs," according to the Web site's mission statement. The non-profit service also operates without pop-up ads. "Right now we aren't charging students or companies," Hedvat said. "Not to say that we won't [in the future], but right now we won't charge."

The search engine provides users with information on part-time jobs, full-time jobs, entry-level positions and paid and unpaid internships. It is then the user's responsibility to contact potential employers with a cover letter and a resume.

Companies that post openings with the Web site represent the arts, sciences, retail, food services, education, marketing and government.

Nine hundred companies have posted with Bigapplehead.com, including many large businesses with extensive levels of employment.

The service caters to Rutgers students looking for employment close to home in Central Jersey or Manhattan, Hedvat said.

Currently, Bigapplehead.com has stickers and posters displayed throughout the University. Hedvat himself goes to interest group meetings in hope of promoting the Web site. Even University professors are promoting the service, he said.

Although Bigapplehead.com has successfully placed many students in jobs, "a lot of companies overlook Rutgers," he said.

Rutgers College senior Jonathan Lu first heard of the Web site on career day in January. "I was looking for an internship [in marketing]," Lu said. "I can find any internship open on that site."

According to Lu, all he was required to do was send his resume with a cover letter. "I had a phone call the next day to set up an interview because they said they wanted to talk to me." Lu said. "It was pretty easy...like finding a classified."
